A driver’s license may be suspended for a number of reasons in Virginia, either by the court or the DMV. A common reason for license suspension by the DMV is accumulation of too many demerit points. This license suspension applies to both adults and minors, but the number of convictions and amount of points resulting in suspension are different depending on the driver’s age. DMV Points and Driver’s License Suspension of Minors in Virginia
Most traffic offenses in Virginia are punished with DMV demerit points (in addition to fines). The driver will be automatically assessed 3, 4 or 6 points by the DMV, depending on the severity of the charge. These points will remain on the offender’s Virginia driving record for 2 years, but the conviction for the offense will stay on the driver’s record longer.
DMV Points and Driver’s License Suspension of Minors in Virginia: First Offense
A driver convicted of committing a traffic offense when he was under the age of 18 will be required to take a driver improvement class if the offense resulted in DMV demerit points. If the driver fails to take this class within 90 days, the DMV will suspend the driver’s license until the class is completed.
DMV Points and Driver’s License Suspension of Minors in Virginia: Second Offense
If a driver under the age of 18 is convicted of committing ANY 2 offenses resulting in DMV demerit points, the DMV will suspend the driver’s license for 90 days. The driver can apply to the Juvenile and Domestic Relations court for a restricted license, but granting this restricted license is in the discretion of the judge.

A third conviction for a traffic offense resulting in DMV points committed while a driver was under 18 will result in driver’s license revocation for one year or until the driver reaches age 18.

Driving on a Suspended License in Virginia is a criminal offense, punished with a high fine, jail, and/or further driver’s license suspension. A third offense in 10 years is punished with a mandatory MINIMUM of 10 days in jail.
