What is a Hit and Run in Fairfax?
A Fairfax Hit and Run occurs when a driver or passenger in a vehicle involved in an accident fails to report that accident. Virginia law requires a driver involved in an accident to stop and provide his name, address, driver’s license number, and vehicle registration number. If the accident involved unoccupied property and the driver cannot find the property owner, he must leave a note with this information as well as his contact information, the date, time and location of the accident, and a description of the property damage. He must also notify the police in writing within 24 hours.
A passenger can even be criminally charged for failing to report a Fairfax Hit and Run. Any passenger over the age of 16 who was involved in an accident and knew the driver did not make the required report must report the accident to the police himself within 24 hours.
