DMV Demerit Points in Virginia are Negative Points Added to a Person’s Driving Record After a Traffic Conviction

The Virginia DMV adds demerit points to an offender’s driving record after convictions for most traffic offenses.  The number of points depends on the offense.  Demerit points remain on an offender’s Virginia driving record for 2 years from the offense date, but the offense will remain on his record longer.   The Virginia DMV will even assess points for traffic convictions from other states.

The DMV will suspend a driver’s license for committing a traffic offense resulting in demerit points while on DMV probation.  A driver’s license will also be suspended for accumulating 18 points in 12 months or 24 points in 24 months.  Drivers under 18 who commit traffic offenses resulting in demerit points are punished more harshly than drivers over 18 who accumulate demerit points.
