What Are Virginia DMV Demerit Points?
The Virginia DMV adds demerit points (or negative points) to a person’s Virginia driving record after convictions for most traffic offenses. The number of points depends on the severity of the offense. DMV demerit points remain on an offender’s Virginia driving record for 2 years from the offense date, but the conviction and record of the offense will remain on his driving record longer. The DMV in Virginia will even assess demerit points for traffic convictions from other states.
A driver’s license will be suspended by the DMV for committing a traffic offense resulting in demerit points while on DMV probation. A driver’s license will also be suspended for accumulating 18 points in 12 months or 24 points in 24 months. Drivers under 18 who commit traffic offenses resulting in DMV demerit points are punished more harshly than drivers over 18.
