What is a Fairfax Hit and Run?
Virginia law requires any driver involved in any car accident, no matter how minor it seems, to provide his name, address, driver’s license number, and vehicle registration number to the other driver or police. If the accident involved unattended property and the driver cannot locate the property owner, he must leave a note with this information in addition to his contact information, the date, time and location of the accident, and a description of the damage. He must also report the accident to the police, in writing, within 24 hours. Failure to report this information will result in a criminal charge.
If the accident resulted in less than $1,000 in property damage, the Fairfax Hit and Run charge is a misdemeanor. If the accident resulted in more than $1,000 in property damage, injury, or death, the offense is a felony.
