Controlled Substances in Virginia

The Virginia Code classifies controlled substances (or drugs) into 6 “schedules.”  The schedule of the drug is determined by its potential for abuse, risk of dependence, and accepted use in the medical community.

Controlled Substances in Virginia Schedule I Controlled Substances in Virginia

Va. Code §54.1-3445 states that Schedule I Controlled Substances have a high potential for abuse and have no accepted medical use or lack accepted safety for use in treatment under medical supervision.  Common Virginia Schedule I Controlled Substances include Heroin, Ecstasy and LSD.  For a full list of Schedule I Controlled Substances in Virginia, see Va. Schedule II Controlled Substances in Virginia

Schedule II Controlled Substances in Virginia are drugs that have some accepted medical use but also have a high potential for abuse which may lead to severe psychic or physical dependence (Va. Schedule III Controlled Substances in Virginia

Schedule III Controlled Substances in Virginia have a lower potential for abuse than the drugs in Schedules I and II, and their abuse could lead to moderate or low physical dependence or high psychological dependence.  Additionally, these controlled substances have accepted medical use.  See Va. Schedule IV Controlled Substances in Virginia

Schedule IV controlled substances in Virginia have a low potential for abuse which may lead to limited physical and psychological dependence and have accepted medicinal use.  See Va. Code §54.1-3451. Schedule V Controlled Substances in Virginia

Va.
